Synopsis: Comedy, drama, romance. In present-day London, well-off couple Alfie and Helena have split up. Alfie pursues his lost youth and falls for a free-spirited call girl named Charmaine. Helena visits charlatan fortune-teller Cristal, as her family reason that Cristal may give Helena some hope and will be cheaper than expensive pyschoanalysts. Helena goes on to form a liaison with recent widower Jonathan, who owns an occult bookshop and who is neither tall nor dark. Meanwhile, Alfie and Helena's daughter Sally and her American husband Roy are having marital difficulties. Sally develops a crush on her handsome art gallery owner boss, Greg, who is himself unhappily married, while Roy, a novelist awaiting the response to his latest manuscript, becomes moonstruck over Dia, a musician neighbour whom he watches through her window opposite their own. Roy makes a move on Dia and also hatches a dishonest plan for literary success. The plans people make by and large do not turn out well, but Helena's false hope has led her to a relationship with someone like-minded, and the two happily speculate about their past lives.
